Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST)

Reflects liver function.

What it tests: An enzyme found in the liver, heart, and muscle that rises when those tissues are damaged.

Why it is important: Read alongside ALT, the pattern between the two often points to the underlying cause (fatty liver, alcohol stress, intense exercise, or muscle injury) rather than just flagging that something is off.
