Cholesterol / HDL Ratio

Evaluates cardiovascular risk by comparing total cholesterol to protective HDL.

The Cholesterol / HDL Ratio compares your total cholesterol to your protective HDL cholesterol. It's one of the most reliable everyday signals of cardiovascular risk because it factors in both how much cholesterol you have and how much of it is in the protective form.

What it measures. Total cholesterol divided by HDL cholesterol. A ratio of 3.5 or lower is generally considered desirable in published literature; higher values are associated with greater cardiovascular risk.

Why it matters. Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. The ratio gives a more complete picture than either number alone — high total cholesterol with high HDL is a different risk profile than high total with low HDL.

What influences it. Diet quality, body composition, physical activity, alcohol intake, sleep, stress, and genetic factors. Lifestyle changes can move the ratio within weeks to months.

Worth knowing. The ratio is one input among many — Apo B, Lipoprotein(a), and inflammatory markers like hs-CRP often complete the picture in a functional medicine workup.
